We live in a world that is full of lies, untruths, and prevarications. Some of the lies we call commercials. Some of the liars we call politicians. That does not mean all commercials are necessarily lies or that all politicians are liars. You can make your own call on that. Unfortunately, many people believe many of those lies.
I want to talk to you about the BIGGEST LIE of all. It has been around a long time and it takes many subtle shapes and forms. Most people succumb to this lie at some point in their life in one way or another.
It began in a paradise setting called Eden. There the first man and woman lived in perfect harmony with all creation and in perfect communion with the Creator. God had placed only one restriction on Adam and Eve; the fruit of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
You likely remember the story. All was well until one day, Satan came into the garden in the form of a serpent and he tempted Eve. He called her attention to how desirable this fruit was, and He suggested to her that God’s Word was not reliable. In fact, he suggested to her that God was in fact holding out on her. Satan suggested to Eve that by eating the fruit of the forbidden tree she would become just like God. Here it is, the BIGGEST LIE: You can become a god.
When Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree they enthroned “SELF” as king of their life. They believed in eating that fruit they would possess the right to decide for themselves what was right and what was wrong. That lie has never faded or diminished.
Sometimes it takes the form of a religious cult where a person believes something like this: “As we are now, God once was. As God is now, we can become.” Other times it may be much more subtle. In fact it may sneak into an evangelical church in the form of my rights to expect the church to meet my needs. There may be no culture on earth more self-absorbed and self focused than western civilization has been. It may even be the subtlety that leads a group of professing believers to think they can get any prayer answered by simply speaking a word, as if they could create.
It is not my desire to make a political statement with this post, but it is evident in our current American presidential campaign. Donald Trump is declaring that America can be great again. Conceivably and potentially indeed it can, but not because Donald Trump says so. It can only be great if the One True and Only living God says so. That begins with repentance, which has at its very core, death to self.
Jesus said it clearly. If anyone would come after Him, they would have to deny self. No, you cannot become God. But even more than that for most, no you have no right to be in charge of life in any capacity. You must die daily to self. You must dethrone self and enthrone Christ, if you want to know life at its very best. We need to stop believing life’s biggest lie. It has produced a consumerist church and an entitlement culture in our nation.
We will find life when we once again fall on our knees like the people of God after Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal, crying , “The LORD, He is God.” He is the only God. He is Creator, and we are Created. Maybe if we remember this truly we will position ourselves to be recipients of the incredible grace and steadfast love of the Creator for His Created. Let’s root out this lie from our hearts. Don’t begin by trying to get a speck out of your neighbor’s eye while you have a log poking out of yours. Start in your own heart. I will start in mine. May God bless His people as we die to self, taking up our cross, and following Jesus.
